Michael Smith, founder of Equus Design Group is both an architect and urban designer. With over twenty-five years of experience as an architect, he has prepared designs for hundreds of projects with a particular emphasis on institutional facilities and housing. He has special expertise and is recognized nationally for his design of precast concrete building systems.

His firm’s work has been honored with numerous awards from the American Institute of Architects, the Associated General Contractors, the American Concrete Institute, the Precast Concrete Institute and the American Correctional Association. Mr. Smith has also received a Presidential Design Award for his design of public housing.

Mr. Smith is a founding member of the Boston Society of Architects/Associated General Contractors Committee on Recommended Practices and past chair of the BSA/AGC Design-Build Committee. He is currently co-chair of the Belmont Historic District Commission. He is the former president of Monacelli Associates, where he developed the firm's practice under the mentorship of his Harvard professor Theodore Monacelli.

He holds A.B. in Environmental Design and Master of Architecture degrees from the University of California, Berkeley and a Master of Architecture in Urban Design (MAUD) degree from Harvard University.
